What is surface class a?

Surface class A refers to the highest standard of surface flammability classification for building materials. This classification is based on the ASTM E84 test, which measures the flame spread and smoke development of a material when it is exposed to fire.

Materials that receive a surface class A rating have demonstrated excellent fire performance by limiting flame spread and smoke development. They are typically made of materials that are inherently flame-resistant or have been treated with fire-retardant coatings.

Some common materials that may receive a surface class A rating include fire-rated gypsum board, concrete, and certain types of wood that have been treated with fire-retardant chemicals.

Choosing building materials with a surface class A rating can be an important consideration for building safety, particularly in high-risk areas or buildings where fire safety is of particular concern, such as hospitals, schools, and office buildings.
